GGI + What to Watch for on Opening Weekend

GGI

What the 4th-annual GGI lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality, with 16 pre-season #1's taking center stage in Davison.  In total, 59 ranked wrestlers are entered in the tournament, and will be a very tough test for the field at nearly every weight.

126 features a trio of #1-ranked wrestlers  and defending state champions across Divisions 1, 2, and 3 in Caden Horwath, Jackson Blum, and Cam Chinavare.  Five other weights - 106, 113, 132, 144, and 175 - will have two top-ranked competitors headlining the field.  

Beyond that, look for some new faces to emerge on the Michigan high school wrestling scene, including a solid crop of incoming freshmen who will be gunning to create some movement in the early season rankings.

A good pre-season test for four top-six squads.  Potential matchups include a postseason preview between Gaylord and BJCG, as well as both of them against returning finalist Goodrich.  Depending on how the pools shake out, could see all of those happen, as well as the aforementioned three taking on perennial D1 power Bedford along the way.

Romeo nearly pulled the upset against Davison on Wednesday, falling 39-33, and they'll look to see how they match up with top-ranked DCC just three days later.  Should be a good indicator for next week's dual versus the Cardinals for CC.  Returning state quarterfinalist Imlay City will also be in attendance looking to continue their momentum from last season against a solid field.

Interesting early season matchup between a pair of teams projected to be in Kalamazoo in February - Bronson and Manchester.  If they meet up, it'll carry weight all season long.  Also look for Jackson Northwest to make a run at winning this tournament, as they sit just outside the top-10 in Division 2.
