In their first action since a first place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions, #23 Michigan State opened 2023 with a win on Friday night. The Spartans came away with their seventh-straight win following a 28-9 dual victory over the Bucknell Bison in East Lansing. With their home-opening win, the Spartans improved to 7-0 for the first time since the 1973-74 season in which MSU got out to an 11-0 start.
MSU won 7 of 10 matches in the dual, including 4 wins by bonus points. Tristan Lujan started the dual off with a major decision at 125lbs. Chase Saldate added another major decision at 157lbs, while Layne Malczewski picked up a 2nd period pin at 184lbs, and Cam Caffey earned a 19-2 tech fall at 197lbs. Rayvon Foley was the winner by 5-4 decision at 133lbs, beating #22 Kurt Phipps.
The Spartans will wrestle next in East Lansing on January 13th against #5 Michigan.

#5 Michigan had a road trip to California over the weekend, wrestling Cal Poly and Cal State Bakersfield. In the first dual, Michigan claimed seven of 10 matches, earning a trio of six-point bonus wins, to defeat #25 Cal Poly 30-11. Most notably, Cameron Amine made his season dual debut, earning a 5-2 decision over #30 Legend Lamer. Dylan Ragusin and Mason Parris earned first period falls, while Chance Lamer won by injury default after taking the lead over #18 Dom Demas.
Michigan wrapped up its west-coast road trip with a dominant 36-0 win against CSU Bakersfield on Sunday afternoon. The Wolverines, who improved to 5-0 in duals this season, earned three bonus wins and earned their first shutout win in five seasons. Dylan Ragusin and Cole Mattin won the two ranked matches of the afternoon, defeating #19 Chance Rich and #28 Angelo Martinoni, respectively. Brendin Yatooma won the most excited match of the day, with a 6 point move in the final seconds to beat Mateo Morales 8-3.

Bonus points and overtime matches were the difference in the Chippewas loss to Clarion on Sunday. CMU lost overtime matches at 125lbs and 165lbs. Additionally, Clarion was able to earn a major decision at 141lbs, and pins at 149lbs and 184lbs. Will Feldkamp, a graduate of Dexter HS, was the winner by fall at 184lbs for Clarion. Vince Perez, Corbyn Munson, Alex Cramer, and Bryan Caves were the winners for the Chippewas, all winning by decision.
