College Week 9 Recap

UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

#3 Michigan was on a road trip in Big Ten action this past weekend. On Friday, Michigan traveled to Happy Valley to take on #1 Penn State. On Sunday, #24 Rutgers hosted the Wolverines. Against the defending NCAA champs, Michigan won the first and last matches of the dual, but the Nittany Lions won all the matches in between en route to a 30-8 victory. It was Michigan's first dual loss of the season, dropping them to 7-1.

Jack Medley started the dual with a tech fall over Gary Steen, and Mason Parris ended the dual with a big win over #1 Greg Kerkvliet, which avenged a loss from last season. The win will bump Parris up to #1 in this week's rankings. The Wolverines had opportunities to pick up victories elsewhere but were unable to capitalize. At 133lbs, Dylan Ragusin earned the first takedown against #1 Roman Bravo-Young, but the defending national champ battled back to beat Ragusin in a close 4-2 match. At 157lbs, Will Lewan dropped an overtime match to top-20 Levi Haines. Lewan was in on numerous leg attacks but was unable to finish, and Haines earned the upset win with a takedown in sudden victory.

In the other big match of the night, Cam Amine and Alex Facundo picked up where they left off in high school during their Detroit CC and Davison rivalry. Two of the best wrestlers in MHSAA history split their matches in high school, and their first meeting in college was another overtime match. Facundo scored first with a slick takedown in the first period, but Amine battled back and took the lead with a slide-by late in the third period. The takedown, which was not initially called, was successfully challenged and overturned. On the restart, Facundo was able to get an escape to send the match to overtime. After neither wrestler scored in the two minute frame on their feet, it went to two 30-second rideouts. Each wrestler was able to earn an escape, but Facundo had a riding time advantage, which gave him the win on criteria.

Michigan got back in the win column on Sunday against the Scarlet Knights. The Wolverines won 7 of 10 matches, including ranked wins at 133lbs and 184lbs. Ragusin got Michigan on the board with a 2-0 win over #17 Heilmann at 133lbs. Fidel Mayora earned his first victory of the season at 157lbs with a 7-3 decision. Lewan and Amine kept the ball rolling before Max Maylor had a big win at 174lbs. Maylor used a riding time advantage to beat All-American Jackson Turley at 174lbs. Matt Finesilver picked up another ranked win at 184lbs, this time in a 7-2 decision over #13 Soldano. Mason Parris put an exclamation point on the dual with his 10th pin on the season.

Up Next: Michigan will be at Home Friday and Sunday, taking on Ohio State and Maryland, respectively.

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

MSU was on the road over the weekend, visiting Rutgers in Piscataway on Friday, and then wrestling Penn State at Rec Hall on Sunday. Against Rutgers, five Spartans earned individual victories, including one major decision, but #20 Michigan State dropped a tightly contested 16-15 decision to #24 Rutgers.

The Spartans dropped swing matches at 125 and 133lbs, both ranked match-ups. Michigan State did not get on the board until the 157lb match, where Chase Saldate stayed hot with a 5-0 win over Andrew Clark. Caleb Fish earned a decision before Layne Malczewski picked up MSU's biggest win of the dual. He majored #13 Soldano to keep the Spartans in the dual. Caffey picked up a sudden victory takedown at 197lbs over Billy Janzer, and Ryan Vasbinder won 3-0 to close out the dual.

Note: MSU was deducted one team point after the 184lb match for a bench warning.

On Sunday, Michigan State wrestled #1 Penn State. Like the Rutgers dual, MSU got on the board at 157lbs, where Chase Saldate earned a 6-2 decision over Terrel Barraclough. 165lbs was the match of the dual, where Alex Facundo hit a slick duck under and scored on the ensuing scramble to beat Caleb Fish in OT. Fish had beaten Facundo last year at the Southern Scuffle. At 184lbs, Malczewski earned his second dual victory of the weekend, this time beating Donovon Ball 6-0. Penn State reversed another result from last year at 197lbs, this time as Max Dean beat Cam Caffey 4-0.

Up Next: MSU will be home against Maryland on Friday and at Ohio State on Sunday.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY

The Chippewas kicked off their weekend with a win, extending their winning streak to three duals. CMU traveled to Durham, North Carolina, on Thursday to take on Duke. CMU won 9 of 10 matches, including three by bonus points and won by forfeit, en route to a 33-4 victory over the Blue Devils.

Sean Spidle kicked things off with an 8-0 major decision over Logan Agin before Vince Perez earned 6 team points by forfeit at 133lbs. Corbyn Munson improved to 18-8 on the season with yet another pin, this time over Preston Decker in the 2nd period. Tracy Hubbard was the last Chippewa to earn bonus points, winning 10-2 at 157lbs.

On Sunday, CMU took part in the Chippewa Challenge, which was hosted by Campbell this year.  The Chippewa Challenge includes teams that are coached by former CMU wrestlers that competed for Tom Borelli (Luke Smith, Jason Borelli, and Scotti Sentes). The Chippewas fell, 21-16, to Smith's CSU Bakersfield squad; 18-17 to Jason Borrelli's American team; and 23-15 to Sentes' Fighting Camels.

Three Chippewas went undefeated on the day, led by Corbyn Munson at 157lbs and Alex Cramer at 174 pounds, both going 3-0 on the day. Munson had two decisions and a major decision on the day, while Alex Cramer had a decision, a major decision, and a tech fall. Johnny Lovett went 2-0 on the day, after Mason Shrader got his first career start for the Chippewas at 149lbs against CSU Bakersfield. The duals against American and Campbell both came down to the last match, and the dual against CSU Bakersfield was not decided until the 197lb match.
