Fargo Day 2 Recap

While Michigan was sitting in 1st place in both women's 16U and Juniors entering Day 2, they were able to finish top-3 in both divisions. 16U finished 2nd, while the Junior women finished 3rd.  Team Michigan had 14 All Americans overall, including 6 in 16U and 8 in Juniors. Maddie Nieuwenhuis (16U 100lbs) and Sabrina Nauss (Junior 180lbs) led the way as champions. That's the 4th stop sign for Nauss, which puts her in elite company with some Michigan's all-time Fargo greats.

Nieuwenhuis started the tournament with 4 straight techs, going unscored upon in that run. Nieuwenhuis then reached the finals with a 6-6 criteria win over #23 Elizabeth Valenzuela-Smith (AZ) in the semis. In the finals, Niewenhuis had a big 2-0 win over #3 Caley Graber of Minnesota. Already ranked top-10 in the country as a freshman, the win should bump her into the top-5 nationally.

Sabrina Nauss was at dominant as it gets. She picked up three techs and two pins in the tournament, including a pin in the finals over #5 Cheyanne Ruiz of Utah. Nauss also had a 10-0 tech over #3 Isabella Renfro of Missouri in the semis.

Michigan's other finalist was Maddie Hayden at 16U 152lbs. Hayden picked up a massive win over #5 Sarah Henckel of Connecticut in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Hayden picked up a pin over Brynn Shepardson of New York to reach the finals. In the finals, Hayden's national championship bid came up short after losing to #20 Mya Bethel of Florida.
