Men's 16U and Junior freestyle sessions are now in the books, and Team Michigan is leaving Fargo with multiple All Americans, including one Stop Sign. Overall, Michigan finished in 11th place in the 16U division with 5 total placers. Jarrett Smith (Lowell) led the way for men's freestyle with a 1st place finish at 94lbs, while Wyatt Lees, Gavin Craner, Nicholas Sorrow, and Blake Cosby all reached the podium.
Smith had a wild match in the semis. Trailing 2-2 on criteria with 10 seconds left, Smith faked a shot, snapped to a front headlock, and hit a nice head pinch for a 2-point exposure to reach the finals. In the finals, Smith cruised to a 3-0 victory over Turner Ross (Minnesota) to become Lowell's first ever Fargo champion.
At 106lbs, freshman D1 state champ Wyatt Less (Detroit CC) had an outstanding tournament, going 5-2 and reaching the semis. Lees had a controlling 6-0 lead in the semis with less than a minute remaining before getting caught on his back and giving up the fall to Bruno Cassioppi (IL). Lees would end the tournament with a 9-2 win over Swenson (MN) to finish 5th.
Nick Sorrow (Hudson) finished 7th at 113lbs and had a big win on the way to the podium. In the consi quarterfinals, Sorrow ran into Lincoln Sledzianowski (PA), who is ranked 3rd in the country at 106lbs. Sorrow was able to come away with a pin in that match to secure a spot on the podium. Sorrow finished the tournament 7-2, including a win over Willcox (CA) in the 7th place match.
Like Lees, Gavin Craner (Belding) reached the semis before falling to the eventual champ Adrien Reyes of California. Craner, a state runner-up as a freshman, finished the tournament 5-2 for 5th place on the podium. In the quarterfinals, Craner cruised to a 13-4 tech over Brown (Missouri) to secure a top-6 spot on the podium and reach the semis.
Blake Cosby (Dundee), another freshman state runner-up, was the final All American for Team Michigan. Cosby won 5 matches en route to an 8th place finish. Two of Cosby's losses came to Zeno Moore (Florida), including once on the front side and once in the 7th place match.
In the Junior division, Michigan had one placer, which was Cory Thomas (Pontiac) at 160lbs. Thomas finished 6-2 en route to a 7th place finish. Thomas had two massive wins on the weekend, both against #3 nationally Collin Guffey of California. Thomas beat Guffey, a Stanford commit, in the Round of 16 to reach the quarterfinals, and then again in the 7th place match. While the first match was a 15-10 barnburner, Thomas dominated the second match, cruising to a first period 10-0 tech.
