Greco Recap

14U National Duals wrapped up in Philadelphia this past weekend, with the Greco portion of the competition being wrestled Wednesday and Thursday, followed by Freestyle on Friday and Saturday. Team Michigan brought two squads to each style. Michigan Blue's Greco team led the way for the weekend, earning the #1 seed and ultimately finishing as national runner-ups

After winning Pool A in three competitive duals, Michigan advanced to the Gold Pool. The first round of the Gold Pool took place on Day 1, with Michigan dropping a tough dual to a loaded California squad. However, because of the round robin format, Michigan was able to beat a Minnesota team that knocked off California. With criteria being most points scored, Michigan was able to secure a spot in the finals. In the finals, Michigan would come up short, losing to a remarkable PA team 45-31. The 2nd place finish was the highest Michigan finish all-time at the 14U National Duals.

Michigan Red had a tougher weekend, going 0-4 in a loaded Pool C and then 0-5 in the Green Pool. Entering the tournament unseeded, Michigan Red saw the A teams from Pennsylvania and New York before seeing tough teams from Georgia and Louisiana. Xavier Ruffin was a standout in Greco, going 7-1, while Blake Adkins was right behind him at 6-2.

Freestyle Recap

Michigan Blue also led the way in Freestyle, going 5-2 on the weekend and taking home 5th place. The big win of the tournament came over Ohio Gray in the semis of Pool B. Michigan trailed 35-34 heading into the last match before Murphy Rousse picked up a massive pin at 126lbs to send Michigan to the pool finals. Brennan Hart had perhaps the biggest win of the dual, beating former Michigan standout Cam Smith 9-0 at 80lbs. Michigan Blue was loaded from 80lbs through 126lbs with Hart, VanValkenburg, VanPortfliet, DiGiovanni, Olmedo, Boucher, and Rousse combining for a 39-5 record on the tournament. Across the two tournaments, Jaxson Boucher went a perfect 12-0, while Treyton Werth was 14-0 on the weekend.

The Gold Pool was split up into a Pool A and Pool B, with Michigan being put in the loaded Pool B. Michigan lost a heartbreaker to California, and then lost a competitive dual to the eventual champs PA Blue. Ohio Gray won their 3 duals in the weak Pool A by a combined 11 points to advance to the finals, where PA Blue would win 59-12.

Michigan Red went 1-5 on the weekend, with their lone win coming in the Purple Pool 5th place match over Rhode Island. Aaron Prize was led the way at 115lbs, going 4-1 on the weekend.
