(Flint, MI) The Agon Wrestling Championships arrived in Michigan on Saturday and the countdown clock started for AGON II on Sunday afternoon. Public weigh-ins were held at Davison High School and a fan meet and greet were held at the Genesee County Wrestling Tournament.
“We are very excited about the AGON II card and we are very happy to hold this event in a great wrestling state like Michigan,” asserted AGON co-founder Mike DiSabato. “To hold the weigh-ins at Davison High School is honor with Brent Metcalf, an alum, headlining the main event with Chris Bono.”
The AGON II card is sure to pump up Michigan wrestling fans and is certain to gather attention from across the country. The event will be held at 2:00 at the Perani Arena & Event Center on Sunday. CF Athletic, Cage Fighter and NUWAY will sponsor a live webcast of the event on the AGON website, www.AGONWC.com.
In a Hawkeye versus Cyclone main event, Brent Metcalf, a four-time Michigan state champion, takes on Chris Bono in a match up of three-time college All-Americans and former NCAA champions. Michigan natives and four-time NCAA All-Americans Cam Simaz and Ben Bennett will battle each other; Andy Simmons will wrestle Kellen Russell in a matchup of former Michigan State and University of Michigan All-Americans; and NCAA champion Max Askren will face Michigan State coach Sam Wendland.
The Weigh-ins and fanfest for AGON II were held in conjunction with the Genesee County Tournament. With over 20 teams in the gym, at least 250 wrestlers on the mat, and over 2,000 fans in the gym people were excited that professional wrestling had come to Michigan.
“This is a great tournament year after year and we really look forward to competing here. We have had some of the best Division I, II, III, and IV teams from our area over the years and at times we have state champions versus state champions in the finals,” offered one of the high school coaches. “Today we had NCAA Champions, Olympians, and MMA stars in the center of the mat for a show and it was special that the kids got to be a part of AGON.”
The AGON Wrestling Championship II will conclude a full day of wrestling in the Perani Arena & Event Center. The day will get started with the annual MIWAY Mat Mayhem youth wrestling tournament and a dual between perennial Michigan powers, Lowell and Davison high schools.
