College Recap: Cornell Wins Two, Hofstra Cruises, Army Tops Penn and More

In their last dual meeting as EIWA foes, Cornell earned a 29-9 win over Rutgers in Ithaca on Sunday afternoon.  The Big Red took seven of the bouts, including pins from Nahshon Garrett (125) and Gabe Dean (184) as well as major decisions by Mike Nevinger (141) and Jace Bennett (197).

Two of the Big Red's losses came in overtime on penalty points, with Mark Grey called for an illegal scissors at 133 pounds and Jacob Aiken-Phillips whistled for locked hands at heavyweight.

It was the second win in as many days for the Big Red wrestlers, who began the weekend by shutting out Brown, 38-0.  That triumph was the 60th consecutive Ivy League dual meet win for Cornell, a streak that goes back to 2002.

Garrett set the tone early with a major decision at 125 and a pair of pins followed. Grey notched the fall in his return at 133 pounds while Nevinger earned the team six points with a pin of his own at 141.  Brian Realbuto also earned bonus for the squad with a 9-0 triumph at 157.

In the feature match, #3 Dean of the Big Red edged nationally-ranked Ophir Bernstein, 3-2, at 184 while Conner David picked up a sudden victory takedown to defeat former NCAA qualifier Cortlandt Choate at 149.

Reed, Deuel Continue to Roll; Bearcats Drop Two

Binghamton dropped a pair of duals at home over the weekend, but there were some big victories and plenty of drama.

On Saturday, the Bearcats and American waged a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final buzzer where Mark Cirello of the Eagles hung on for a 2-1 decision that gave American a 21-19 victory. (Joe Bonaldi was close to securing the winning takedown as time expired).

The Eagles jumped out to a 9-7 advantage after four bouts of the meet that started at 157.  However, the upperweight duo of Cody Reed (197) and Tyler Deuel (285) continued to wrestle well, with Reed topping #12 Daniel Mitchell by decision and Deuel following with a pin over 2013 EIWA runner up Blake Herrin to put their team ahead 16-9.  There were several lead changes from there.

Also winning for the Bearcats were Vincent Grella (165), Caleb Wallace (184) and Nick Tighe (141).  For more on that dual, see this link.

On Friday, Old Dominion beat Binghamton 21-12.  Grella, Reed and Deuel all came out on top against the Monarchs, as did 125-pounder David White.  For more on that meet, see here.

Hofstra Cruises Past Drexel

Hofstra captured eight bouts in a commanding 29-9 triumph over Drexel in Hempstead on Friday night.

The Pride won the first four contests, including bonus points from Jamie Franco (major at 125), Jamel Hudson (major at 133) and Luke Vaith (technical fall at 141).  Cody Ruggirello earned a decision at 149, as did Frank Affronti (174), Victor Pozsonyi (184) and Michael Hughes (285).  In addition, Joe Booth recorded a major at 165.

Columbia Edges Bucknell on Criteria for Fifth Straight Victory

The Columbia Lions collected their fifth win in a row on Friday when they edged Bucknell, 19-18 on criteria.

The Ivy squad trailed 9-3 after four bouts, with Matt Bystol garnering the lone victory at 141 pounds.  However, the Lions won the next four to move ahead 18-9 on the scoreboard.  That run included decisions by Markus Scheidel (157), Josh Houldsworth (165) and Zack Hernandez (184) as well as a pin by Shane Hughes (174).  However, the Bison responded, picking up nine points in the last two matches to tie things up at 18.

Flannery Pulls Upset, But Buffalo Falls Against Conference Opponents

On Saturday night, Old Dominion bested Buffalo, 21-10.  However, the Bulls had some solid wins.  At 125, Mike Soria earned a major decision, while Tyler Rill picked up three points for the team at 165.  Nick Flannery had a big victory when he topped #4 Chris Mecate of the Monarchs 12-7.

The next day, MAC foe Ohio captured a 34-6 win over the Bulls.  The upperweight duo of Tony Lock (184) and Angelo Malvestuto (197) came out on top for Buffalo.

Army Powers Past Penn and Drexel

Army picked up six wins to beat Penn, 21-13 in the first of two dual meets in Philadelphia on Sunday.  The Black Knights scored big points in the lightweights, with a forfeit at 125 and a pair of decisions at 133 and 141 by Logan Everett and Tyler Rauenzahn (in sudden victory).  Also coming out on top were Paul Hancock (157), Brian Harvey (174) and Bryce Barnes (197).  After beating a nationally-ranked grappler (Daniel Mitchell) last week, Barnes once again topped a wrestler who spent time in the polls, Frank Mattiace of Penn.

On Sunday night, Army made it a two-for-two day with a 20-19 triumph over Drexel.  The Black Knights fell behind early, trailing 13-3 after 141 pounds.  However, the squad proceeded to win the next five matches, including majors by Chandler Smith and Bryan Harvey, at 165 and 174, to build an insurmountable lead going into heavyweight.
