Phase I of The US World Team Trials went down in Madison, WI last weekend. A ton of wrestlers with Michigan ties were in action, but Davison native Brent Metcalf was the only one to land a spot on the US World Team. Metcalf will be competing at 65kg on his 3rd World Team and 2nd in a row.
Metcalf, who was a 2x NCAA Champ at the University of Iowa, grinded out two hard fought wins over former Oklahoma State NCAA Champ Jordan Oliver, 4-2 and 3-0 to win the best-of-three Championship Series.
Metcalf has been on a hot streak as of late, going unbeaten at the World Cup and beating world #1 Kurbanaliev of Russia at Beat The Streets. With his experience on the international level and the new rules matching up with his style, he appears to be in line to contend for his first World Medal at this year's World Championships.
"I've got a lot of experience on the international scene," said Metcalf, "We all know that and I know that, and its time to put it all together and get what I want."
Former CMU All-American Wynn Michalak and former Davison High School standout Jon Reader were the other two Michiganders to place in the event. Michalak was 4th in the Challenge Tournament at 97kg while Reader was 4th at 86kg.
