Sophomores Shine for the Jayhawks

The Jayhawks traveled to River Grove, IL on Saturday, December 13 to complete in the Art Kraft Open. The Jayhawks were light in numbers this weekend, only entering eight wrestlers, due to a combination of injuries and illness. But the guys that were health performed well. Both sophomores Tyler Stenberg (Twin Lake, MI/Reeths-Puffer HS) and Mason Courtright (Shelby, MI/Shelby HS) won titles beating nationally ranked wrestlers in the finals. Freshman Jay Sroufe (Britton, MI/Dundee HS) won the most pins in least amount of time with three pins in a time of 5:38.

Stenberg beat #12 Isaac Rentas of Ellsworth CC 8-2, while Courtright beat #9 Sadarriss Patterson of Ellsworth CC by a fall in 3:23. “Both guys are wrestling really well and are great examples for the rest of the team to follow.” said Head Coach James Tietema. “They work hard at practice and in the classroom.” Other place winners for the Jayhawks were: freshman TJ Barnes (Belleville, MI/Summit Academy HS)- 3rd @ 17, freshman Chris Root (Lansing, MI/Lansing Catholic Central HS) - 5th @ 157, freshman Ali Rashad (Highland Park, MI/Renissance Academy HS) - 5th @ 165, freshman LaVonte Perdue (Warren, MI/Warren Mott HS) - 3rd @197, and freshman Jay Sroufe (Britton, MI/Dundee HS) - 3rd @285.

The Jayhawks will go into the 2015 NWCA Duals ranked #3 in the NJCAA polls. The national duals will be in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind. on January 9 and 10.
