Genesee County
Per usual, D1 #2 Davison dominated their county competition. The Cardinals had over 100 more points than any of their competitors. However, the rest of the field was extremely tight. Montrose finished 2nd with 140 points, Lapeer 3rd with 139, D2 #7 Clio 4th with 135.5, and Corunna 5th with 134.
One of the most notable matchups of the day came in 112 finals. State champ Max Johnson of Davison, currently #2 at 119, dropped down to his weight from a year ago. However, he lost by fall against D3’s top-ranked Jarrett Trombley, a Corunna freshman. In another big one, D1 #3 Dillon Ellsworth of Lapper avenged a loss from last weekend, winning 4-3 over D2 #6 Chase Smith of Clio. At 160, D1 #5 Milik Dawkins of FCA continued his hot start to the season, winning 3-1 over D1 #3 Brenden McRill of Davison.
Kent County
The inaugural event was a big success, and D3 #3 GRCC was the class of the field. The Cougars finished the day in 1st place, 36 points ahead of runner-up Rockford. Taking 3rd was Grand Rapids FHC, followed by 4th place Byron Center and 5th place Thornapple-Kellogg.
GRCC’s big guns were dominant all day. #1 Devin Schroder, #1 Nate Limmex, #1 Foster Karmon, #2 Grant Tennihill, and #5 Kole Krauss all won titles at their respective weights while winning all of their matches by fall, tech, or forfeit.
The day’s biggest upset was probably in 152 finals where Rockford’s Nick Guerra knocked off D3 #9 Dominic Forbes of GRCC by a score of 5-3. Another notable finals matchup came at 125 where D2 #2 Chris Poland of TK knocked off D1 #9 Austin Tomko of GR FHC via a 7-1 decision.
Macomb County
Following a runner-up finish in 2013, it was all Anchor Bay at this year’s edition of the Macomb County Championships. The Tar’s won the tourney in convincing fashion, 65 points ahead of runner-up Warren Lincoln. Last year’s champ D1 #8 Macomb Dakota, finished 3rd, 4th place honors went to Utica Eisenhower, and Marysville finished the day in 5th.
The field was highlighted by 4 top-ranked wresters; Austin Thompson of Marysville, Conor McDill of Utica Eisenhower, and Jelani Embree of Warren Lincoln. All cruised to titles at their respective weights.
WWT sophomore Joe Schindler put together a very impressive day at 125. A 4th place finisher at 103 last year, Schindler won his final 3 matches by scores of 4-2, 7-5, and 8-7 to claim his first county title. Another standout performer was D1 #4 Tyler Grimsley of Anchor Bay. He had an impressive 19-6 major decision in the finals over D2 #4 Derrien Perkins of Warren Lincoln.
Oakland County
D1 #3 Detroit CC won their 6th straight county title, narrowly outscoring D1 #7 Walled Lake Central by 13.5 point. Finishing 3rd was Oxford, who finished 80 points behind WLC. D2 #10 Ortonville Brandon finished 4th, and Lakeland rounded out the top 5.
Individually, one of the most notable matchups was at 189, where #1 Nick Giese of DCC majored #2 Alex Sovel of WLC in a potential D1 state finals preview. Another big bout came in the 130 finals where Alex Hrisopoulos of Oxford, ranked #4 in D1 at 125, slid up a weight and beat #2 Dan Shear of WLC. Milford’s Brandon Krol also had a big day. He pinned D1 #4 Justin Hollins of West Bloomfield in the semis before recording a first-minute fall over WLN’s Jamie Demers in the finals.
Wayne County
There weren’t any ranked squads in attendance, but the 6th annual Wayne County championships was a well a balanced tournament that featured a lot of quality matchups. Southgate Anderson took the crown, narrowly edging runner-up Plymouth. Woodhaven finished the day in 3rd, followed by Annapolis in 4th, and Riverview in 5th.
The toughest weight was probably 215, which featured 4 ranked wrestlers. In the finals, D1 #2 Cody Tis of Southgate earned a hard fought decision over D1 #7 Mitchell Gross of Salem. Meanwhile, 119 featured a trio of ranked guys. D1 #7 Chris Brown of Belleville continued to impress, beating D1 #8 John SIemasz of John Glenn in the semis, and D1 #6 Brandon Harris in the finals. Finally, in perhaps the day’s biggest matchup, D1 #1 Logan Parks of Southgate topped D2 #5 Brandon Garcia of Riverview via decision.
