103
1) D3 #4 Garrett Cleveland, Berrien Springs (11) – SQ
2) D3 #6 Roy Costello, Richmond (10) – RQ
3) D2 #9 Brendan Zelenka, St Johns (9)
4) D3 #7 Davynn Schneider, Allegan (10) – RQ
5) D4 #2 Anthony Mack, Dansville (9)
6) Terrin Machart, Utica Ford (9)
7) Ryan Miller, Oxford (9)
8) Austin Edwards, Schoolcraft (9)
This group has plenty of talent but lacks a favorite. I’m high on Zelenka who recently won the Goodrich TOC and was a GFC placer this fall.
Prediction: Zelenka, Schneider, Machart
112
1) D4 #1 Brendan Abrigo, Manchester (12) – State 2nd
2) D4 #2 Robert LaFevre, Erie Mason (10) – State 3rd
3) D2 #3 Michael Higley, Edwardsburg (11) – 2X Placer
4) D4 #7 Dayton VanderPloeg, Martin (10) – State 4th
5) D3 #4 Conor Behem, Richmond (12) – State 7th
6) Sergio Borg, Oxford (9)
7) Zak Lopinski, Hudson (10) – State 8th
8) #2 #7 Emilio Lopez, St Johns (10) – SQ
Abrigo/LeFevre could potentially be a D4 finals preview, but I like Higley to win this weight. He had a big win over D2 #4 Dylan Wilkins last weekend.
Prediction: Higley, Abrigo, LeFevre
119
1) D3 #1 Devin Schroder, GRCC (11) – 2X State Champ
2) D4 #1 Logan Griffin, Erie Mason (12) – 2X State Champ
3) D4 #3 Roddy Hamdan, Hudson (12) – State Champ
4) D2 #5 Trent Lashuay, St Johns (10) – State 7th
5) D4 #5 Ethan Woods, Manchester (10) – State 6th
6) D4 #6 Noah Teague, Springport (9)
7) Hunter Vargo, Edwardsburg (11) – RQ
8) Ramiro Williams, Berrien Springs (11) – SQ
This is an absolutely stacked weight class with 3 state champs, but I think Schroder is a step ahead of the field. He’s ranked #8 in the country at 120lbs and looked stellar winning the DCC Invite over D2 #1 Lucas Hall a couple of weeks ago.
Prediction: Schroder, Griffin, Hamdan
125
1) D3 #4 Aaron Kilburn, Richmond (11) – State Champ
2) D2 #1 Ian Parker, St Johns (11) – State Runner-Up
3) D3 #3 Alex Martinez, Ida (11) – State Runner-Up
4) D1 #4 Alex Hrisopoulos, Oxford (11) – State Runner-Up
5) D4 #1 Clay Ragon, Dansville (11) – State 3rd
6) D4 #8 (119) Justin Braford, Springport (11) – State 8th
7) D4 #10 Reese Jones, Watervliet (10) – SQ
8) D3 #8 Tyler Orrison, Dundee (9)
There’s no shortage of great brackets at this event, but after 171 this is probably the next best. As a state champ Kilburn is the top seed, but the favorite is Parker who comes in ranked #14 in the country at 120lbs.
Prediction: Parker, Hrisopoulos, Martinez
130
1) D4 #1 Dresden Simon, Dansville (11) – State Runner-Up
2) D4 #2 (125) Tyler Roberts, Hudson (12) – State 4th
3) D4 #5 Pat Lynch, Watervliet (12) – State 7th
4) D4 #10 Sean O’Hearon, Springport (10)
5) Michael Iler, Jonesville (11) – RQ
6) D4 #7 (125) Spencer Fox, Schoolcraft (10) – RQ
7) Joey Orr, Allegan (11) – RQ
8) Payton Hunt, Martin (9)
Simon is definitely the guy to beat here. He had a phenomenal offseason and is still unbeaten on the year.
Prediction: Simon, Roberts, Lynch
135
1) D3 #2 Zack Blevins, Dundee (11) – 2X Placer
2) D3 #3 Dakota Ball, Ida (12) – State Champ
3) D3 #5 Kole Krauss, GRCC (11) – State 4th
4) D1 #10 Collin Campbell, Oxford (12) – RQ
5) Robert Standlick, Adrian (12) – SQ
6) D4 #8 Michael Prock, Hudson (12)
7) Ethan Sharp, Schoolcraft (10) – RQ
8) Nick Dettling, Manchester (12) – RQ
Blevins is my pick, he recently had a win over Ball and beat Krauss in the bloodround of last year’s state tournament. He’s technically sound but also has the ability to score big points from a lot of different positions.
Prediction: Blevins, Krauss, Ball
140
1 D3 #1 Nate Limmex, GRCC (12) – 2X State Champ
2 D4 #5 (135) Brock Vlcek, Manchester (12) – 2X SQ
3 D2 #5 Lucas McFarland, St Johns (10) – SQ
4 Dustin Vires, Edwardsburg (12) – SQ
5 Taylor Whitmore, Springport (11) – RQ
6 Sam Smith, Martin (12)
7 Chace Foster, Michigan Center (10)
8 Robert Sours, Jonesville (12)
Ranked #6 in the country at 138lbs, Limmex might be the safest pick of the tournament. He’s extremely well rounded and after his controlling win over nationally ranked Austin Thompson at the DCC Invite I don’t see anyone coming close to beating Limmex this season.
Prediction: Limmex, McFarland, Vlcek
145
1) D3 #1 Foster Karmon, GRCC (11) – State Champ
2) D1 #3 (152) Dillon Ellsworth, Lapeer (12) – State Runner-Up
3) D4 #2 Mason Lopinski, Hudson (11) – State 3rd
4) D3 #2 Sean Sterling, Dundee (10) – State 4th
5) D3 #3 Austin VanAtter, Richmond (12) – State 6th
6) D4 #9 Todd Myers, Martin (11) – RQ
7) Derek Droste, St Johns (11)
8) D4 #8 Corey Johnson, Manchester (12) – RQ
If they meet in the finals, Karmon/Ellsworth will be a rematch of an absolute barnburner from the finals at DCC where Karmon won by 1. Both will be tested prior to the finals though with Lopinski, Sterling, and VanAtter on the chart.
Prediction: Karmon, Ellsworth, Lopinski
152
1) D4 #1 Kyle Johnson, Hudson (11) – State Champ
2) D4 #4 Zeth Caudill, Springport (12) – 2X SQ
3) D2 #8 Bret Fedewa, St Johns (10) – SQ
4) D3 #9 (145) Dom Forbes, GRCC (11) – State 5th
5) D4 #8 Zach Mobley, Martin (11) – SQ
6) D4 #9 Zac Sharp, Schoolcraft (11) – SQ
7) Michael Wells, Utica Ford (11) – SQ
8) Matt Cuevas, Manchester (12) – RQ
Johnson is the favorite, but he’ll need to bounce back from a loss to Ida’s Alex Phillips on Wednesday. Fedewa had a bad day at the Goodrich TOC, but also has some really impressive wins from earlier in the season.
Prediction: Johnson, Fedewa, Caudill
160
1) D3 #2 Donny Mandell, Dundee (12) – State 4th
2) D1 #10 Noah Kinne, Lapeer (12) – SQ
3) D3 #6 Austin Pawlak, Richmond (12) – SQ
4) D3 #10 Alex Phillips, Ida (12) – RQ
5) Joey Hess, Edwardsburg (10) – RQ
6) Daniel Brown, Springport (12) – RQ
7) Johnie Boone, Berrien Springs (12)
8) Jordan Jobe, Watervliet (11)
Mandell is a pretty clear-cut favorite and already has a win over Phillips, but Phillips is red hot after beating Kyle Johnson and Sean Sterling on Wednesday night.
Prediction: Mandell, Kinne, Phillips
171
1) D2 #1 Logan Massa, St Johns (12) – 2X State Champ
2) D3 #1 (160) Devin Skatzka, Richmond (12) – 3X State Champ
3) D3 #1 Brandon Whitman, Dundee (9)
4) D3 #2 Levi Sabin, Allegan (11) – State 5th
5) D3 #4 Kevin Curby, Hillsdale (12) – 3X SQ
6) D4 #9 Nick Cooper, Springport (10) – SQ
7) D3 #9 Jared Tennihill, Grand Rapids CC (12) – SQ
8) D4 #6 Clayton Brockway, Hudson (12) – SQ
No question about, this is the feature weight for this year’s Super 16 tournament. Massa beat Skatzka in a competitive match in the finals of this tournament last year, but Skatzka will have to get by Whitman if he wants a rematch. Whitman is the most impressive Michigan freshman I’ve seen in 5 years of covering wrestling, and last weekend he bumped up and had wins over D1 #1 Nick Giese and D2 #1 Ty Wildmo. Sabin is also coming off a big win; he was up big on D1 #1 Devon Pingel last weekend before winning by injury default
Prediction: Massa, Skatza, Whitman
189
1) D3 #1 Chase Beard, Allegan (10) – State 5th
2) D3 #1 Ty Wildmo, St Johns (12) – State 3rd
3) D3 #5 Tye Thompson, Dundee (12) – State Runner-Up
4) D4 #5 Adam Lammers, Springport (12) – State 8th
5) D1 #3 Wyatt Harden, Oxford (11) – SQ
6) Jake Lemerand, Hillsdale (10)
7) D4 #6 Tylor Grames, Hudson (10) – SQ
8) Jordan Adams, Richmond (12) – SQ
Beard has been one of the breakout stars of this season. He beat Wildmo in December and also beat D1 #1 Nick Giese to win the DCC Invite. Wildmo will have to beat Thompson to get another crack at Beard, which is a rematch from the Goodrich TOC finals where Wildmo won.
Prediction: Beard, Wildmo, Thompson
215
1) D4 #1 Jacob Cooper, Springport (12) – 2X State Champ
2) D3 #2 Grant Tennihill, GRCC (12) – State 3rd
3) D1 #6 Jacob Perry, Lapeer (12) - RQ
4) D2 #4 Nic Sturgis, St Johns (12) – RQ
5) D3 #8 Austin Farrell, Allegan (11) – SQ
6) D4 #9 Mitch Ely, Hudson (12) – SQ
7) D4 #8 Ethan Simmons, Martin (10) – RQ
8) David Curl, Watervliet (11) – RQ
Another extremely deep weight, but Cooper is the hands down favorite. He’s ranked #15 in the country at 220lbs. Tennihill/Perry would be a rematch from the DCC Invite where Tennihill won via an OT takedown.
Prediction: Cooper, Tennihill, Perry
285
1) D1 #2 Dan Perry, Lapeer (11) – State 4th
2) D2 #6 Jacob Gnegy, St Johns (11) – SQ
3) D3 #1 Adam Boyd, Richmond (12) – SQ
4) William Corbin, Jonesville (12)
5) Nick Daniels, Michigan Center (12)
6) Adam Schlickenmeyer, Oxford (11)
7) D3 #10 Jacob Holmes, Allegan (11)
8) Bobby Livernois, Erie Mason (12)
Perry is under the radar nationally, but talent wise I think he might be one of the top 20 heavyweights in the country. The field is solid, but I fully expect him to dominate.
Prediction: Perry, Boyd, Gnegy
