Michigan started with five straight wins, earning upsets in three, and took seven total bouts en route to a decisive 24-11 win over #2 Iowa in Ann Arbor on Friday. Most notably, true Freshman Sergio Lemley cruised to a 14-2 major decision over #1 Real Woods at 141lbs. Lemley looked to have had Woods flat at the end of the third, but nonetheless, the 7-point move locked up the major for the Wolverine. Also earning bonus points for Michigan were Shane Griffith (174lbs) and Lucas Davison (285lbs), both over ranked opponents. Michigan was without starters Cameron Amine (165lbs) and Jaden Bullock (184lbs), but were still able to seal the dual after the 184lb bout. The 13-point margin was Michigan's most decisive win over the Hawkeyes in 50+ years. Michigan will end the regular season with three straight road duals before the B1G tournament.
Michigan State also picked up a big win on Friday night. MSU won seven matches, including three with bonus points, on Friday night to down #26 Illinois for the first time since 2011. It was MSU's second-straight victory over a ranked opponent after defeating then #17 Wisconsin last Friday night. Starting at 141lbs, the Spartans won three of the first five matches to take a lead into intermission. After the break, Michigan State cruised to four straight wins to clinch the dual, including a 17-second pin for Josh Terrill at 285lbs. Unfortunately, MSU could not use that momentum to pick up a win on Sunday. After taking the first 4 matches against Indiana (the dual started at 157lbs), the Spartans had an 18-0 lead. A pin for Saldate, a forfeit to Caleb Fish, and a big win for DJ Shannon over top-15 DJ Washington helped the Spartans build a big lead. The Hoosiers, however, would take the next 6 matches to beat MSU 23-18.
Central Michigan stayed hot, winning their fourth out of their last five duals. The Chippewas hosted MAC-foe Ohio at McGuirk Arena, and they jumped out to an early lead after winning the first four matches. Alex Cramer had the biggest win of the dual, taking down ranked Sal Perrine in sudden victory at 174lbs. Cameron Wood would put the dual away at 197lbs, and Bryan Caves put an exclamation point on the dual with a pin in the last match. Sean Spidle also picked up bonus points in the dual, teching Ryan Meeks at 125lbs. CMU will also have a single dual next weekend, hosting Buffalo.
