The MAC tournament is completed, and 5 Chippewas have punched their tickets to the NCAA tournament. CMU locked up a 2nd place finish in the MAC, trailing the champion Lock Haven by just a few points. Central Michigan put 6 into the MAC tournament finals, although they did not have a conference champ. Sean Spidle (Flint Powers Catholic) and Mason Shrader (Brighton) were MHSAA state champs that both became the first ever NCAA qualifiers from their respective schools with their runner-up finishes. CMU also qualified Johnny Lovett (157lbs), Chandler Amaker (165lbs), and Alex Cramer (174lbs).
The B1G tournament is over halfway done, with the remainder being wrestled today. Michigan has 6 qualifiers locked up with the opportunity for a few at-large bids with solid consolation rounds today. The Wolverines are currently in 7th place, with Jacob Cardenas being the solo representative in today's finals. He had a big overtime win to avenge his regular season loss to Josh Barr (Penn State, Davison HS). Dylan Gilcher (Detroit Catholic Central HS) had a huge OT win over Cartella (Northwestern) to send him to the NCAA tournament for the Wolverines. Sergio Lemley (141lbs), Chase Saldate (157lbs), Beau Mantanona (165lbs), and Josh Heindselman (285lbs) are the other qualifiers for Michigan.
Michigan State's Caleb Weiand kept the streak alive for Dakota HS, who has now had an NCAA qualifier for the last 6 seasons. Remy Cotton (Davison HS) went 0-2, but because the Big Ten will take 10 wrestlers at 197lbs, he still has the opportunity to wrestle back for 10th place today and punch his ticket to the NCAA tournament. Heavyweight Max Vanadia was the other automatic qualifier for the Spartans after his win via medical forfeit by Slavikouski (Rutgers).
Purdue's Stoney Buell (Dundee HS) is still alive to wrestle back for 9th at 165lbs in the Big Ten, which would punch another ticket to the NCAA tournament for him. The Ivy League conference tournament is today, so Cornell's Marcello Milani (Orchard Lake St. Mary HS) will have an opportunity to add to this list as well.
