MLS picked up the first win of the dual and then it was all Hudson from there on out, as the tigers racked up 11 falls and won the final 13 bouts of the contest.
Definitely the most exciting dual of the morning session. Manchester won a couple key swing matches early in the dual which allowed them to know what was needed to close out the dual. Ultimately, Manchester led by 5 going into the final bout and #3 Carson won an entertaining 7-6 match over #5 Norton that had everyone who was left in the arena on their feet.
Benzie Central advanced to their first-ever semifinals after picking up a convincing win over Iron Mountain. The Huskies built a sizeable lead out of the gates and were able to snag two of three tight decisions between ranked wrestlers at 138 and 175. Iron Mountain's top-three ranked wrestlers Wilson, Winch, and Stroud all picked up wins for the Montaineers.
The Sharks came out swinging in the first few weights and Climax-Scotts/Martin never really could get any momentum going after that. St. Louis took eight of the twelve contested bouts before forfeiting the final two weights. 106 saw a solid bout between #1 Gilbert and #3 Fogel in which Gilbert was able to pull away late. St. Louis will look to advance to the finals tomorrow for the first time since 1995.
DIVISION 1
The Shamrocks picked up twelve falls en route to a convincing win in the opening round. Mott's win came at 144 from two-time state qualifier John Kaminski, who picked up a 7-0 decision.
Rockford advanced to the semis for the second year in a row with a win over Bedford, their first win over the Mules since 1997. At 106, Martin scored a key major to open the dual in a match between top-eight ranked wrestlers. Bedford rebounded and took four of the next six. The Rams took two of three swing matches between 157-175 and then closed it out with a pair of falls and a tech.
As expected, this one came down to the wire with Davison pulling off the mild upset to advance to tomorrow's semifinal. Brighton picked up key swing match wins from Hardesty and Courneya, but the Cardinals did a great job maximizing bonus points where they could get them and saving them where they couldn't. The big moment in this one came at 190 when 3x girls state champ Nauss landed a second-period headlock on Armstead, though Armstead would go on to win by decision. The win for the Cardinals sets up a rematch against Hartland from December.
Hartland took six of the first seven matches in this one, five of which earned bonus points. At 138, #5 Culver trailed #2 Wilson 7-4 before landing a third-period spladle for a fall to keep the momentum going for the Eagles. Dakota took four of the last seven bouts, but it was not enough as Hartland once again finds themselves back in the semis.
DIVISION 3
Dundee stormed out to a 36-0 lead to start the dual before Lakewood picked up three falls in four matches to make interesting. Once the dual rolled back into the lowerweights, Dundee was able to put it away and lock up a spot in the semis.
As expected, an awesome dual here that came down to the final match. In the first nine weights were decided by either one point or in overtime - the teams split wins at two apiece. With three weights remaining, Hart trailed by 17 and needed three falls to advance. They came close - notching two falls and picking up an overtime win in the final bout. Constantine moves into the semis for a second straight year and gets a rematch with Dundee.
Another really good one in the 3-6 quarterfinal, with Clinton picking up a seven-point victory and moving on. Yale scored big bonus points and Clinton won the ones they needed to win - with four decisions by two points or less. The RedWolves won nine bouts in the dual and will have a rematch with Whitehall in the semis; the two had a one-point dual back in December.
A more competitive dual than the score may suggest in this one. Gladwin opened the dual with a win and then scored upset wins later on in the dual. Whitehall went on an eight match run that virtually put it away, and which included a matchup between senior all-staters won by Mack over Solis. The Vikings also got a welcomed return from all-stater Wyatt Jenkins, who made his season debut in the dual.
DIVISION 2
The Red Arrows won nine of 12 contested matches in the opening round, advancing to the semis. At 132, #1 Blum scored a tech fall over Saenz, ranked #1 at 126; it marked the third straight year the two had wrestled in the team quarterfinals. Rice picked up wins from Davis, Shango, and Steele.
A wild one from start to finish here. The two teams traded wins in the early going before Simota put together a third period rally capped off by a fall in a match between ranked opponents. At 165, all-stater Granger made his season debut and was able to survive with a clutch decision. The final two matches of the dual featured an OT match and a fall at 285 in win the dual in the final match. Had it not been for Three Rivers-Greenville, this is your dual of the day.
One of the most exciting duals in recent years at Team State. First off, both programs' fans traveled well. But the back-and-forth unpredictability of the dual made it a must-watch. Three Rivers appeared to be cruising after notching some key swing wins in the lower weights. At 132, Andrews picked up a fall late in the third while trailing. At 150, Three Rivers responded with a massive fall in a tight match as well. 175 featured two all-staters, where Dobson picked up a third period takedown to seal a huge win. Then at 190, Earles caught Smith rolling through on a cradle in the second for a fall which set the arena on fire. #1 Johnson majored at 215, and with Greenville having eight wins logged already, Three Rivers needed a tech or pin to advance. Reynolds scored a decision in a matchup of regional qualifiers, but it was not enough, as the Yellowjackets pulled it out by a single point and moved on to tomorrow's semis.
More or less as expected in this one - the two teams traded wins in the early parts of the dual, where the score ran to 24-21 with five bouts remaining. Freeland's upper weights, who have been lights out all year, slammed the door with a pair of majors and a pair of falls to put it out of reach. The Falcons move on to the semi's in a rematch with Greenville; the two teams met roughly a month ago and Freeland won by 10.
