#5 Julius Pacheco (Davison) SO, 26-6 vs Julian Brenner (West Bloomfield) SR, 39-5
#3 Nathaniel Carter (Clarkston) JR, 34-5 vs #14 Nik Lemons (Grand Blanc) SR, 28-6
#13 Peyton Ingram (Flushing) JR, 40-12 vs #6 Anthony Najjar (Bloomfield Hills) SR, 37-3
#1 Dallas Korponic (Hartland) JR, 43-4 vs Gavin Brown (Traverse City West) FR, 21-9
Outlook: Korponic is the returning state champ, but he will definitely be challenged on Saturday, likely seeing two guys ranked in the top-6. Pacheco and Carter would be a fantastic semifinal match on the top half of the bracket.
113
#1 Layne Martin (Rockford) SO, 36-3 vs #10 Dylan Putman (Mattawan) SR, 39-9
#4 Bronson Shinkonis (Brighton) FR, 40-1 vs Lucas Huitron (Grandville) FR, 24-10
#8 Isaiah Hudnell (East Kentwood) JR, 28-8 vs #9 Jackson Brown (Grand Ledge) SO, 25-8
#7 Connor Wallace (Howell) SR, 41-10 vs Travis Henderson (Reeths Puffer) FR, 35-10
Outlook: 60% of the top-10 is being represented here, so we will see at least two guys in the top-10 not qualify for the state tournament. Martin and Shinkonis is an awesome potential semifinal match!
165
#2 Andrew White (Detroit CC) SR, 28-9 vs Eli Johnson (Saline) JR, 16-14
#5 Zach Miracle (Temperance Bedford) JR, 48-3 vs Mason Melcher (South Lyon) SR, 35-10
#6 James Dunne (Northville) SR, 39-4 vs Donavan Stone (Wyandotte Roosevelt) JR, 26-12
#4 Yaseen Jaber (Allen Park) SR, 38-4 vs Basho Muhlbauer (Northville) SO, 31-17
Outlook: Four of the top 6 in the state in this one. Melcher, Muhlbauer, and Stone are unranked but also tough. Returning state placer White is the favorite, and we are excited to see that top-5 matchup in the semis.
120
#5 Stanley Anderson (Fraser) SR, 32-3 vs Terry Daniels (UD Jesuit) SR, 33-8
#10 John David Quinlan (Rochester Adams) SO, 33-10 vs Desmond McCree (Fraser) SO, 16-7
Landon Smith (Macomb Dakota) SR, 25-16 vs #11 Cameron Leone (Warren Mott) SR, 26-6
#6 Valentino Adamo (Romeo) SO, 36-11 vs Owen Lewis (L’Anse Creuse) SR, 22-11
Outlook: 3 of the top 10, plus another ranked in SQ Leone. Adamo beat Quinlan in a close match last week, and we could see a rematch this week, but Stanley Anderson will be tough to get through. Leone/Adamo would be another great semi.
126
#1 Jeremiah Brown (Flint Kearsley) SR, 18-0 vs #12 Zach DeKorne (Sparta) SR, 35-16
#5 Payton Paguada (Allendale) SR, 36-7 vs #14 Michael Wilson (Freeland) SO, 34-10
#13 Braylon Davis (Croswell Lexington) JR, 50-5 vs #11 Kamden Witte (Greenville) SR, 38-13
#2 Quinten Cassiday (Cedar Springs) SO, 42-0 vs Joseph Schafer (Cadillac) JR, 31-17
Outlook: Cassiday only has one career HS loss, but he will be testing this week. Davis/Witte is a really solid first round match, and Brown/Paguada will be interesting in the semis. We really hope we get to see a Cassiday/Brown finals.
113
#2 Marcus Lowry (St. Joseph) SR, 41-3 vs Carson Andrews (Harper Creek) SO, 34-11
#5 Carson Blum (Lowell) FR, 29-5 vs #14 Grady Erlandson (Plainwell) FR, 34-4
#6 Sawyer Stephenson (Vicksburg) SO, 41-6 vs #7 Christien Miller (Middleville) SR, 33-7
#1 Jarrett Smith (Lowell) JR, 33-3 vs Keegan Leclear (St. Joseph) SO, 23-18
Outlook: Loaded weight here with 5 of the top-7. State champ Smith is the clear favorite, but he will have to get through Stephenson/Miller and then probably either Lowry or teammate Blum in the finals. A top-10 wrestler will be sent home early in this one!
175
#2 Zachary Taylor (Gibraltar Carlson) SR, 47-1 vs #13 Cedric Jackson (Waverly) SR, 32-12
#8 Isaac Sova (DeWitt) SR, 35-8 vs Finnegan Grube (New Boston Huron) FR, 30-20
Conner Dell’Eva (Southgate Anderson) SO, 40-8 vs #12 John Breckel (Adrian) JR, 26-9
#7 Brock Foster (Fowlerville) JR, 22-5 vs Christopher Samacki (Riverview) SR, 36-15
Outlook: 5 ranked wrestlers and a few others that are tough. Taylor is the favorite to win it, but he kicks off the tournament with a tough match over #13 Jackson. Foster/Breckel is a solid potential semi match on the bottom half.
215
#1 Charles White (Orchard Lake St. Mary) SR, 16-1 vs Tyson Taylor (SCS Lakeshore) SO, 29-12
#11 DeWayne Williams (Warren De La Salle) SR, 36-10 vs Sincer Boyd (Swartz Creek) SR, 30-13
#2 James Mahon (Goodrich) SR, 30-2 vs #15 Keegan Dunne (Center Line) SR, 32-7
#10 Joshua Golding (Warren Woods Tower) SR, 30-9 vs Chris Dobek (Fenton) SR, 21-18
Outlook: 5 ranked wrestlers, and we have the top-2 in this one in a rematch of last week's district finals. White had a huge upset last week with a pin over Mahon in the finals, so it'll be interesting to see what happens in that rematch, assuming it happens.
150
#4 Tyler Bray (Kingsford) SO, 37-4 vs Collin Howitt (Clare) SR, 10-5
#3 Jon Koepf (Chippewa Hills) SR, 35-4 vs Chase Swanson (Cheboygan) JR, 24-12
Gavin Comero (Ishpeming Westwood) JR, 30-11 vs Gabe Wolverton (Reed City) SO, 20-14
#2 Martine Wiggins (Shepherd) SR, 38-4 vs Devin Jurmu (Negaunee) JR, 20-18
Outlook: 3 of the top-5 here, so 150 gets the nod for the toughest weight at the region. Bray and Koepf is a great semifinal match, with the winner likely getting Wiggins.
190
#1 Gavin Craner (Whitehall) SR, 50-0 vs Chase Miostan (Millington) JR, 13-20
#6 Gunnar Williams (Portland) JR, 25-6 vs Malachi Plunkett (Montague) SR, 15-14
#16 Brenden Avery (Tri County) JR, 15-5 vs #7 Alex Schram (Swan Valley) JR, 39-4
#3 Caden Minton (Corunna) SR, 48-3 vs Carlos Buendia (Grand Rapids CC) JR, 21-20
Outlook: Another bracket with over half of it ranked. State champ Craner is the heavy favorite, but he should have tough semis and finals matches. Avery/Schram is a really solid first-round match.
132
#2 Lucky Gartin (Algonac) SR, 46-4 vs Benserlado Munoz (Voyageur Prep) SO, 25-9
Patrick McShane (Milan) SO, 23-5 vs #4 Kersten McClelland (Yale) JR, 45-5
#3 Christopher Galiana (Imlay City) SR, 38-6 vs Montrell Parker (Hazel Park) JR, 20-4
#1 Braden Broderick (Dundee) JR, 26-10 vs #9 Miguel Quintanilla (Mt. Morris) JR, 48-5
Outlook: This is the only region in the state with #1, 2, 3, and 4. Not much margin for error in this one! At least one guy in the top-10 will be sent home early. Gartin/McClelland and Broderick/Galiana are incredible semis matches.
215
#3 Evan Davidhizar (Constantine) SR, 47-5 vs #10 Trever Gritzmaker (Adrian Madison) SR, 26-11
#4 Dallas Smith (Napoleon) SR, 30-9 vs #14 Lucas Zeiger (Buchanan) JR, 33-14
#13 Hayden Groth (Dowagiac) SR, 31-7 vs #5 Joe LaSalle (Olivet) SR, 38-11
#2 John Petersen (Hillsdale) SR, 43-3 vs Joel Fish (Constantine) SR, 34-12
Outlook: Almost as impressive as 132 in Regional 11-3, we have four of the top five at 215 in this regional. Not only do we have #2, 3, 4, and 5, but we also have three ranked matches in the first round. This is one of the tougher regionals across the entire state.
165
#13 Hudson Derry (Rogers City) SO, 25-10 vs Kelvin Travis (Alcona) SR, 21-9
#9 Crew Tyler (Roscommon) JR, 38-3 vs Kollin Bird (St. Ignace) JR, 28-19
Jaydon Niemi-Alcorn (Rudyard) SR, 32-9 vs #12 Beau Belanger (TC St. Francis) SR, 33-10
#8 Conner Wenkel (Benzie Central) SR, 40-7 vs Landon Ross (Norway) SO, 6-8
Outlook: Regional 13-4 has potentially the most parity in D4, with a lot of qualifying spots being wide open. 165 is perhaps the toughest weight in the region, with two in the top 10 and 5 ranked overall. Wenkel is the small favorite with a handful of guys in the mix.
165
#3 Drew Challender (St. Louis) JR, 42-6 vs Aaron Pietrzak (Cass City) SR, 32-15
#5 Noah Adams (Saginaw MLS) SO, 38-9 vs #16 Karson Tweh (St. Louis) SO, 27-13
#4 Lucas Vail (Lakeview) JR, 37-6 vs Randy Loewen (LakeVille) JR, 17-5
#1 Fred Hammond (LakeVille) JR, 44-1 vs Kohen Ely (Pine River) JR, 16-13
Outlook: Absolutely loaded weight here, with #1, 3, 4, and 5 representing. Not too many weights across the state will have top-5 showdowns in both semis of the bracket. Hammond is having a tremendous year and is the favorite, but he will have his work cut out for him in this one.
138
#1 Julien Kimling (Hudson) SR, 15-1 vs Chase Conklin (Manchester) JR, 34-16
#6 Remy Yanakeff (Blissfield) FR, 31-4 vs #8 Carter Foster (Leslie) SO, 37-16
#7 Carson Playford (Jonesville) SR, 32-11 vs Henry Wickenheiser (Monroe SMCC) JR, 22-25
#2 Luke Harrington (Gabriel Richard) JR, 37-4 vs #9 Keegan Tinkey (Leslie) FR, 39-13
Outlook: Without actually running the numbers, it looks like Regional 15-4 may have the most ranked wrestlers across the board. Seems like most weight classes have 5-6 ranked wrestlers in them. 138 is potentially the toughest, with at least two wrestlers ranked in the top 10 being eliminated before the state tournament. State champ Kimling is the favorite, while Harrington, Yanakeff, Playford, Foster, and Tinkey are all tough themselves.
138
#3 Logan Mears (Union City) SR, 33-3 vs #14 Logan Curry (Martin) SO, 20-8
#5 Jayce Ritchie (Martin) SR, 35-12 vs #16 Xavior Zinsmaster (Mendon) SO, 31-10
#10 Gabe Webb (Saranac) FR, 36-3 vs #13 Angel Guzman-Valle (Eau Claire) SR, 33-11
#12 Hunter Pant (White Pigeon) JR, 46-5 vs Wyatt Weinberg (Bronson) SO, 9-5
Outlook: Almost every here is ranked, and 3 guys are in the top 10. Mears is the favorite, but he will have a tough potential semifinal against Ritchie. Someone in the top 14 is not advancing to the state tournament.
105
#5 Emmanuela Alaimo (Glen Lake) SR, 28-1 vs Zaniya Meza (Montague) SO, 18-14
#2 Natalie Gibson (Chippewa Hills) SR, 14-1 vs Aria Rebbie (Menominee) SO, 13-3
#6 Maizy Olson (Powers North Central) FR, 19-1 vs Jaden Reagan (North Muskegon) JR, 17-8
#1 Tatianna Castillo (Lowell) FR, 21-0 vs Aliya Anderson (Reed City) FR, 10-11
Outlook: The big match here would be Castillo/Gibson, but they'll both have to get through top-6 girls first. Castillo was dominant in the battle of #1 vs #2 at districts, beating Gibson by a 13-5 major decision.
235
#3 Isabel Antaya (West Ottawa) SR, 26-0 vs Natalie Ives (Athens) SR, 4-8
#5 Sydney Smith (Portage Central) JR, 15-1 vs #11 Rylan Johns (Portland) JR, 25-8
#8 Grayce Swanson (Plainwell) SR, 16-10 vs #6 Niomi Perez (Hartford) SO, 3-1
#4 Rowan Hegelmann (Bloomingdale) SR, 14-2 vs #12 Brianna Preston (Olivet) SR, 21-11
Outlook: We have half of the top 10 in the state here, as well as two other ranked girls. Nearly every match will be between ranked wrestlers, and at least 2 of the top 12 in the state will not advance to Ford Field. Antaya is undefeated and is the slight favorite, but she will have her work cut out for her.
145
#9 Morgan Ludwig (Midland) SR, 24-3 vs Katalina Thompson (Eaton Rapids) JR, 23-13
#2 Belicia Manuel (Romeo) JR, 24-2 vs #14 Rhiannon Trumble (Mt. Morris) JR, 15-6
#10 Chelsea Roach (Cass City) SR, 25-2 vs #4 Alexandria Hampton (West Bloomfield) SR, 19-4
#1 Maggie Buurma (Fowlerville) SR, 32-2 vs Andrea Freling (Mt. Pleasant) FR, 6-5
Outlook: It doesn't get much tougher than this weight. 5 of the top 10 girls in the state, plus two of the top 10 pound-for-pound girls in the state. Belicia Manuel is ranked 5th in the country, and she doesn't enter as the favorite in this bracket. Should Buurma and Manuel run through gauntlets to reach the finals, we would be pumped to see that rematch. Buurma beat Manuel 8-3 last week at districts.
140
#2 Nanda Kibi (Plymouth) JR, 24-1 vs Ava Danescu (Berkley) FR, 15-17
#4 Jacey Barnabei (Gabriel Richard) JR, 14-4 vs #13 Annabelle Howard (Clinton) SO, 20-12
#12 Emersen Clark (Hudson) JR, 16-12 vs #15 Paige Young (Allen Park) SO, 14-12
#3 Megan Melnyk (Warren Mott) SR, 24-2 vs Carlee Bakewell (Adrian) SO, 9-4
Outlook: We are only missing #1 here. Kibi and Barnabei should be an awesome semifinal match, with the winner likely advancing to see #3 Melnyk. At least two ranked girls will not be advancing to Ford Field in this one.
