The No. 22 Alma College Wrestling team traveled south on Saturday to take part in the Gator "Boots" Duals at McGavock High School in Nashville, TN. The Scots went a perfect 4-0 on the day, including wins against No. 8 Loras College (IA) and No. 18 Johnson and Wales University (RI).
"This was a strong way to end the first semester," said Alma Head Coach Todd Hibbs. "We have much bigger goals for the second semester, but performing how we did today at one of the toughest events in Division III was a great way to close out 2014."
In their first match of the meet, the Scots would face No. 8 Loras College. Down 15-17 with just one match left to go, it would come down to Jr. Trevor Maresh (Northville/Northville) in the heavyweight bout. Maresh was dominant at 285, getting the fall in 2:35 to earn six points and give the Scots the 21-17 victory.
Alma dismantled Simpson College (IA) 43-3, before taking on Johnson and Wales University (RI), the 18th ranked team in the country.
The match against the Wildcats proved very similar to the Scots first match of the day, with Alma turning to Maresh to earn a victory at 285. Mareshwould answer the call for the second time on the day, earning a 5-0 victory to give the Scots the close 18-16 win.
In its final match of the day, Alma handled Washington and Lee University (VA) 45-12 to leave Nashville a perfect 4-0.
Jr. Jamie Jakes (Dearborn/Divine Child) joined Maresh as Scots to go 4-0 on the day, while Sr. Matt Tuttle went 3-0 in his first match of the 2014-15 season.
Alma will take the rest of the month for the holidays before returning to action on January 10th at the Spartan Mat Classic.
